Not So Good for the Soul

Not So Good for the Soul

Long before I became the Notmilkman, a favorite restaurant was Sylvia's on Malcolm X Boulevard in Harlem. Fast forward to 2016. I still enjoy dining in Harlem, minus Southern Fried Chicken, Deep-fried Coconut Shrimp, and Deep-fried Catfish of Sylvia fame at restaurants which have sprouted like fiddleheads in Harlem, representing the new "soul food" such as this one which I wrote about earlier this year:

Vegans do not eat chicken, shrimp, or catfish, arguing that animals do not need to die to satisfy their nourishment needs. For most vegans, it's a compassion issue. Now we learn that eating once-cherished soul food offers a bad choice thanks to the real science published in medical journals.

The November 15, 2015 edition of the International Journal of Cancer had some
very disturbing news for soul food lovers.

Researchers at the Department of Epidemiology and Cancer Center at the University of Alabama studied dietary patterns of cancer mortality of blacks and whites among 22,041 subjects over a ten-year period according to their
diets. Scientists broke their subjects down into the following groups:

1) Convenience (Chinese & Mexican foods, pasta),
2) Plant-based (fruits, vegetables),
3) Southern (added fats, fried foods, Sweets/Fats
(sugary foods) sugar-sweetened beverages), &Alcohol
4) Salads (green-leafy vegetables, salad dressing).

Doctors found:

"Greater adherence to the Southern dietary pattern was associated with an increased risk of cancer mortality...The convenience and Plant-based dietary patterns were associated with a 28% reduced risk of cancer mortality..."

Pass the collards, yams, & black-eyed peas.

"Soul food? It's like trying to cure starvation with a sugar cube. It might
taste sweet on the lips but once it dissolves, the emptiness is still there."
