Health Benefits of Brown Rice

Rice is considered a staple in the diet of many, and a lot of people prefer white rice to brown rice, perhaps because that is what they are used to and never had anything else, or maybe because of its fairly neutral taste, but whatever the reason it isn't that healthy.

White rice is highly processed brown rice and converting "brown" rice into "white" rice destroys 67% of the vitamin B3, 80% of the vitamin B1, 90% of the vitamin B6, half of the manganese, half of the phosphorus, 60% of the iron, and all of the dietary fiber and essential fatty acids.

By law in the United States, fully milled and polished white rice must be 'enriched' with vitamins B1, B3, and iron. But the form of these nutrients when added back into the processed rice is not the same as in the original unprocessed version, and at least 11 lost nutrients are not replaced in any form, even with rice 'enrichment'."( "Health Benefits of Brown Rice", N.D)


Since brown rice is the wholegrain and retains its fiber and nutrients it is a much healthier option than white rice. It is a bit more chewy and has a slightly nutty taste. One cup of brown rice provides you with 14.0% of the recommend daily fiber requirement and the oil in brown rice has also been shown to reduce cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. The fiber can aid weight loss by helping you feel full longer.


As brown rice has more fiber it aids weight loss by keeping you fuller longer and it has been shown that those who eat whole grains tend to be slimmer than those who don't. It also has been shown to reduce constipation and is a good source of selenium which has been found to lower the risk of getting colon cancer. Brown rice is also a superb source of manganese, which has been found to reduce the severity of asthma symptoms, and the frequency of migraines. A fiber rich diet has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer for pre-menopausal women and prevent gallstones. In contrast, eating white rice has been linked to type 2 diabetes.


So before you rush to buy a bag of brown rice, after reading all the benefits make sure to check the expiration date because the nutrients rich product will not last as long as the white counterpart Even the germs in nature know which is a better source of nutrition- granted they also eat road kill and we won't recommend that, but you get the point,-if natural stuff isn't very interested in consuming it you should at least question why, so keep that in mind when picking a bag to buy so you don't waste it. Also, freezing and refrigerating the brown rice can keep it fresher longer.
