Silly George

Silly George

My neighbor asked if I could watch her cats while she was away. One of her cats, George, had to be on a special diet for his health and had special cat food that was only for him and the other had normal cat food that was only for her that he shouldn’t eat.

So I would watch him and try to make sure he didn’t eat the other cat’s leftovers when she was done and keep it out of reach. I have watched the cats for this neighbor many times so I thought I knew what to expect.

George seemed to look forward to eating as usual and it was common to see him looking out the window as I approached the house near feeding time. After feeding the cats, this time I noticed that instead of paying attention to the food the other cat may have leftover as usual, George would quickly rush back to the door where I left my boots and bite them. I don’t know why, maybe he smelled something on it but it was odd that he would do that when I wore boots instead of my regular shoes. This got me thinking about God.

Do we wait on the Lord to provide for us only when we have nothing else to do and then once we get whatever we wanted from God turn around and run right back to trying to fill our hungry souls with random foolishness? God says, “’Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good and you will delight in the richest of fare. Give ear and come to me; listen, that you may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David.’” Isaiah 55:1-3

While I seemed puzzled by this cat’s strange behavior God seemed to be leading me to question my own. Why on earth do I wait on the Lord for some things and then after being blessed try to provide for myself by just biting whatever seems good to bite? I hope we all can learn to accept what God has for us and wait on Him instead of running back and forth between trusting God to provide for us and trying to provide random stuff for ourselves that isn’t good for us.
